Discernment Prayers

Prayer itself, born in Catholic families, nurtured by programs of Christian formation, strengthened by the grace of the sacraments, is the first means by which we come to know the Lord’s will for our lives. To the extent that we teach young people to pray, and to pray well, we will be cooperating with God’s call. Programs, plans and projects have their place; but the discernment of a vocation is above all the fruit of an intimate dialogue between the Lord and his disciples. Young people, if they know how to pray, can be trusted to know what to do with God’s call.

IHM Discernment Prayer

God our Father, in Baptism You called me by name and made me a member of your Church.  You placed within my heart an invitation to follow you along a particular path.

Send your Spirit to guide and strengthen me that I may always do Your will as Jesus did.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, help me to know God’s will for me; form within me a generous heart.  As gift of yoru heart and as fruit of your tears, inspire generous young women to answer the call of your Son to love Him, the Bridegroom, with an undivided heart and to serve His Church as daughters of your Immaculate Heart.  Amen.

Charles de Foucauld’s Prayer of Abandonment

Father,
I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures— I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.     -Charles de Foucauld

Prayer to Know God’s Will

Lord grant that I may always allow myself to be guided by You, always follow your plans, and perfectly accomplish your holy will.  Grant that in all things, great and small, today and all the days of my life, I may do whatever You may desire of me.  Help me to respond to the slightest promptings of your grace, so that I may be your trustworthy instrument.  May your will be done in time and eternity, by me, in me, and through me.  Amen. -St. Therese of Lisieux

Prayer to Know One's Vocation

Lord, my God and my loving Father, you have made me to know you, to love you, to serve you, and thereby to find and to fulfill my deepest longings.  I know that you are in all things, and that every path can lead me to you.
But of them all, there is one especially by which you want me to come to you.  Since I will do what you want of me, I pray you, send your Holy Spirit into me: into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it will all my love, and with all my mind, and with all of my strength right to the end.  Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.

Prayer for Guidance at the Beginning of the Day

Lord, teach me to know the obstacles that, consciously or unconsciously, I am placing in the way of Your grace in me.  Give me the strength to put them aside, and if I am negligent therein, vouchsafe Yourself to remove them, howsoever I may suffer thereby.  What would You have me do this day, my God?  Show me what it is in me that displeases You.  Teach me rightly to value the Precious Blood which You shed for me, of the sacramental or spiritual communion by which we are enabled to drink that Blood from the wound of Your most loving Heart.

Make me, O Lord, to grow in love of You!  Grant that our inner conversation may never cease; that I may never separate myself from You; that I may receive all that You deign to give me; and that I may not stand in the way of the grace which through me should be poured out upon other souls to give them light and life. Amen.

Morning Offering (I)

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.  I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians.  I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops, of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father. Amen.

Morning Offering (II)

O my God, in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee the Precious Blood of Jesus from all the altars throughout the world, joining with It the offering of my every thought, word and action of this day.

O my Jesus, I desire today to gain every indulgence and merit I can, and I offer them, together with myself to Mary Immaculate - that she may best apply them to the interests of Thy most Sacred Heart.  Precious Blood of Jesus, save us!  Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!  Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
